Weel, I just hope Holly is really SOUND asleep by now!

You know we're all looking forward to fireworks when they finish with the memories (and perhaps start making some new memories?)

Author's Response: There's only one memory left to go - that one of Matthew's he's taking a risk with. It's going to go one way or another. *evil grin*

He is a complete and uttter bastard! What is Hope's problem?! I'm shaking my head in dissapointment. Okay, okay, I'll blame it on hormones, but really! She has a LOT to learn! come on Matthew, I'm rooting for you!

Author's Response: LOL It's entirely hormones - well, that and rebellion. Flint does mature nicely though, like a good cheese!

There's a bit of a spoiler in this chapter though. I'd look again at what Matthew and Hope talk about ;)

Really, Hope. That is your happiest memory with Flint?! Guess it was hormones after all. And thank god for that, because we all know who you're meant to be with! Although, it's fun to imagine what Harry and Ginny's responses to that would've been.

Can't wait to see what Matthew's got waiting for her in the pensieve! Thanks for another great chapter and the fast updates!

Author's Response: Well, technically it's not her happiest memory of the time when she was actually *dating* Flint. Matthew's going to call her on that one in the next chapter. She's cheated once already - typical Slytherin!

You have no idea how much I wanted to write the part of the story with Hope arriving home, slightly inebriated with Flint, the motorbike and the underwear. So, so, so tempting!

You know, this is an absolutely wonderful chapter, just as good as the alternate.  I'm so glad you wrote it as the character development really is fantastic.  So happy you decided to do the double posting!

 Drie :)

Author's Response: Awwww. You know you like the next chapter too. It'll be here tomorrow for you to enjoy the replay! Hugs :)

ROFL!!!  That was funny!!!  Hope is one dangerous little girl.  She is going to hate life when she has kids and the shoe's on the other foot!  And Julius - what a devil!  Encouraging Hope like that (no wonder you like Julius!).  This was a fantastic chapter!

It's too bad Harry was such a smothering parent.  While I realize he had his reasons, a lot of times by doing that parents actually foment an atmosphere that causes the very thing they're trying to prevent.  I'm glad to see that Hope's character allowed her to outgrow her need for Julius.

As an aside, I just got bit by another plot bunny!  I had to let this review sit for a moment while I did something else and as I was re-reading it I was struck by the thought of Harry being a grandparent and getting his chance to turn the tables on Hope!  And, of course, siccing his grandchildren on Professor Snape.  This IS a dangerous story!!!!!!!!!!!!  Where'd that plot bunny go?  (*stomps and misses*)

Author's Response: Oh, Hope's got a real rebellious streak in her. She always has had - you can see it in 'Nil Desperandum' as well. Flint's just a handy companion, who really needs no encouragement at all!

Harry's definitely got it wrong with Hope at this point, but most parents make mistakes with their offspring. In his defence, he does work hard to put it right after the whole Flint issue explodes. Hope and Harry've mostly got a good relationship.

LOL I'm saying nothing about these bunnies, other than someone's already been bitten by the Hope having kids bunny. Let's just say she's got NO intention of having kids. Not for a long, long, long time!

It's nice to see that Harry is as clueless as ever, although I have to give Julius points for bravery.  Willfully puting oneself in the path of an overprotective father is not something to be taken lightly.  Of course I'm still a bit upset with him for Mathew's sake.  I really feel for the boy.  I'm not sure Hope would get the point if he found a club, knocked her out, and drug her back to his cave/flat.  I'm nervous to learn what is in Mathew's memory.  I think Hope may be in for quite a shock.

Author's Response: You know, I think that's got to be one of my favourite reviews EVER. I'm giggling madly at the thought of Caveman! Matthew. You're right though. Even naked in Dobby's tea cosy and her mind would be elsewhere!

Lovely, lovely, lovely.

Fun watching Hope and Matthew watching younger Hope and Flint.  Esp. Matthew and the gagging noises.  *snort*

Hope lingered in her doorway, simply watching. New and uncertain feelings surged and churned inside her. For once in her life, she was completely out of her depth and didn't have a clue what to do about any of it. Matthew was her friend. She knew that for a certainty, and it was all she had left to hang onto. She couldn't risk losing him.

This is interesting.  Seeing the great Hope Potter a bit off balanced due to feelings. I love seeing the uncertainty of what's going on with her.  She's not quite sure what to think.

Can't wait until the next installment...

Susan

Author's Response: Poor Matthew - I can't help but feel sorry for him! Hope's well out of her comfort zone with this one, and she's hanging desperately onto what she knows. You're right - it's a nice change to see her like that because she's usually so certain of herself.

Next installment is Tuesday... and it's going to raise a few eyebrows...

I'm enjoying this and looking forward to hearing about Christmas.  What I think I know: 1) whatever happened wasn't public (or Cora would know); 2) there was a physical component (hence various flinching now); 3) Hope feels guilty; but 4) it didn't clue Hope in to Matthew's feelings for her (of course, maybe nothing short of a sledgehammer will do that).  Best I've come up with at resolving these is that Hope, maybe drunk or on the rebound from some other guy, came on to Matthew.  He tried to resist but in the end didn't, and once Hope sobered up she felt guilty for luring Matthew out of his usual gentlemanly behavior and putting a monkeywrench in their friendship.

Off to get some work done so I can read Ch. 8 when it arrives!

Author's Response: Oooooh! Interesting theories! I'm not going to confirm or deny any of them at this point, but you'll get to see soon enough how right you are (or not) with the four of these.

Chapter 8 is literally on its way. I'm doing the final edits and I'll post today.

Hope, you thickhead, he's in love with you! She's denser than Harry! At least, I hope he's in love with her, that' what I'm banking on. Can we please, please find out about Christmas?! I feel bad for Della, but really, that happens so often in relationships. At least he was finally honest with her and never lied about being in love with her. Can't wait for the next update!

Author's Response: She's definitely her father's daughter in some respects! The story about what happened at Christmas is due to crop up very soon, so you'll find out much more about it, and I'm editing chapter 8 now to be posted today. Not long to wait at all!

Thanks for making me giggle. No mean achievement before my morning caffeine infusion!

Beautifully written, as always. You really do set the "gold standard" of fanfic writing. In fact I am getting to the stage where a new Imogen chapter is as eagerly awaited as a new JKR book!

I keep muttering at the screen, "come on Hope, wake up and smell the roses. Matt REALLY likes you, nudge nudge, wink wink."  I can't wait to find out what went wrong at Christmas.

Author's Response: *blushes madly*

I won't keep you waiting for chapters. You're looking at 3-4 days between each at the most for this fic, so it'll be a bit faster than waiting for the next book!

I've got an excellent visual of you now. I wonder if I can make you yell at her later in the fic? LOL

I've been reading this first on the Sugarquill and now here (now that I remembered I had an account here, whoops), and I must say that I really like Hope as a character. I mean, she was an awesome character in 'Nil Desperandum', but I really, really like her in this one. I like that her faults are an interesting mixture of Harry's and Ginny's. The thing that intrigues me the most is that she's a lot more promiscuous (in my opinion, at least) than either Ginny or Harry were at that age (at the Prefect’s Ball). That chapter remains my favorite because I thought it was splendidly done and presented the most fascinating mix of characteristics possible.

That said, I also really like this Matthew character. He’s come a long way from the blushing eleven-year-old, and the best part is that I can see the progression even though I might not have believed it just from reading ‘Nil Desperandum’.

A last note: your slow build-up of romance between these two is both exasperatingly long and agonizingly perfect. I can’t wait for the next chapter!

Author's Response: Like Matthew, Hope's got no intention of repeating what her parents did with their lives. I can't see kids being on Hope's agenda for many, many years! Flint's her first real boyfriend (she was 18 in that memory - at the same age H&G had already had Hope!). You'll get to see lots about what's attracted her to Flint in the next couple of postings here, but part of it is definitely physical!

I think it's been easy to age the characters in some ways - this story's been in my head for years, so I always knew where they were going to end up. I think it might be tricky going back to write the 11 year old versions of them though!

I absolutely love this story...every chapter gets better and better and leaves me wanting more and more!  I seriously check my e-mail for a notice you updated every 5 minutes

The next chapter, I like the idea to post the original chapter, and then post the alternate chapter on here, give us a taste of both worlds!

Author's Response: I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying this. The next update will be Sunda/Monday time, so don't refresh too hard!

I think what I'll do with the next chapter is post the SQ/PS version first, then a day or so later post the real version. I think I can edit them together to make sense of them both being in the story.

Thanks for adding me to the list and for another great chapter.  They keep getting so close...  I can't wait to see what Mathew asks to see next. Now that we've seen what happened with Della I want to know what happened with Julius.  I know you said the memory showed him in a bad light, and Hope seems to think he's alright, but I can't help but dislike him.  Probably because Hope noticed him in a way that she refused to look at Mathew.  I guess I'm petty that way...

Author's Response: LOL Be as petty as you want. My betas were exactly the same to start with as far as Julius goes. I've not written the break up between Hope and Julius, but it ended on a pretty civil note and the two of them have been friends ever since (Unlike Matthew - Della's barely spoken to him since their break up!). Much more Julius next chapter.

Wow! Beautiful and powerfully emotional writing. How did Hope remain so "in denial" about Matthew's feelings toward her, when there are signs that both Della and Julius picked up on it? And more importantly, how did Hope manage to be in denial about her own feelings?

Regarding posting both the more adult and less explicit versions here: You could always have a link to SugarQuill etc., for the latter and just have the former here.

I've begun reading your other stories, because of this one. I finished 'Carpe Diem' already. You are an excellent writer. Please, keep writing.

cheers...  peachpicker

Author's Response: Wow! Thank you so much. I'm thrilled you're enjoying this.

I think Hope's 'problem' is that she's been friends with Matthew for so long, she can't envisage him as anything other than a friend. It's been 11 years by this point - half of her life. Julius' comment to Hope about Matthew was just a shot in the dark - he never genuinely thought anything was going on. Della's always been quite jealous of Hope - Matthew obviously thinks the world of her, and Della felt like she couldn't compete.

You'll have to let me know what you make of the other fics. I'm a complete review junkie ;)

Such a lovely, juicy chapter.  I really think that you've depicted Hope in an interesting way here.  She's in such denial that when she has a physical reaction to Matthew, she doesn't trust herself.  Nicely done!  Oh, and I vote for posting the original chapter, then the alternate one just after.  They're both excellent chapters and both give interesting depths to Hope (and Flint!).

Author's Response: You've got it right on - she doesn't trust herself or her instincts - which is quite out of character in so many ways because she has to have implicit trust in herself and her instincts in her job.

You're right. I'm going to post both chapters. It'd be a shame not to have all that background on Flint.

This story keeps getting better and better.  I am thoroughly enjoying "grown up" Hope and Matthew.  I anxiously await updates from you, and I appreciate the fact you crank them out at lightening speed!  That makes reading this so much easier!

You've done a wonderful job weaving this story with the pensieve memories.  I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

*hugs*

Susan

Author's Response: YAY! You're still reading! It helps with the regular posts that I've actually written the whole story. The most I get to do now is some editing before posting, which is quite quick.

The pensieve isn't a technique I've used before, but it works surprisingly well with the narrative. I think I'd do it again. At least it's different!

Ouch!  That was painful!  Poor Matthew; I'm not sure he quite deserved Hope's comment about him deserving what he got from Della.  It takes a lot of guts to end a relationship.  He could have simply strung Della along until he found or got what he was looking for.  I would like to know more about Della - she sounds a bit like Hermione, only with a tad less self-respect.

All this closeness and now Hope's comment about Christmas...  What DID they DO at Christmas?  Sounds to me like Matt hit a home run and Hope didn't respect herself in the morning...  It's getting more and more interesting.

Can Hope be any more clueless?  Seething mad about Matthew and Della and then telling Matthew that he got what he deserved?  Can't she guess that the girl Della and Matthew were talking about was her?  Too funny!

Thanks for spoiling us rotten!  A beautifully written story and fast updates - who could ask for more!

Author's Response: Della's not much like Hermione, other than the love of books. She's much more staid in lots of ways, but genuinely nice. Matthew was happy with her for quite some time - the relationship lasted for 18 months - but it was never going to work no matter how much he tried. Thankfully he's got a lot of integrity, so he didn't string her along.

As for Christmas, you find out all about that in chapter 9 (well, after chapter 8 parts 1 and 2 LOL)

This chapter was so cute! It had me smiling most of the time. I felt sorry for Della, but it was clear that Matthew had feelings for Hope:). Finally it's going somewhere between Matthew and Hope, yay! The only question is if Hope will act on her newly found feelings or if Matthew's the one to make the first move. Cannot wait for Chapter Eight!

Author's Response: Chapter 8 is on the way and there are two parts to it. I've just got the chapters back from my betas, so I should have them to you by Sunday or Monday at the latest. Matthew's certainly the more aware of the two characters. Hope's always going to be more of a loose cannon!

More angst! I can barely stand it now! What do they want from each other?! Matt is so adorable. Yay to Hope for standing up to that berk! They almost kissed and then what happened? And what happened at Christmas? Thanks for the fast update.

Author's Response: Don't be too harsh on Flint - he doesn't come out well in this chapter at all, but Hope does genuinely like the man, so he can't be all bad!

Christmas is coming very soon, but you're going to be left dangling for a little while first ;) There's nothing like a good bit of unresolved sexual tension!

Reviewer: Annemarie Braun Signed

I liked this chapter! Hope seems so clueless to Matthew's feelings, though. It's actually quite obvious to me. I'm still excited to know what (obviously) Hope did at Christmas, that strained the relationship for a while. Does Della show some jealousy in regards to Hope in the next chapter? That could be a possible cause for the breakup, imo.

Author's Response: The Christmas incident is significant: both of them are still quite shaken by it, so are still treading very carefull around each other - although obviously it's getting easier for them both as the evening goes on. The next chapter is ALL Della, and you definitely get a few of Hope's thoughts and feelings on the topic ;)
